Zoolander Flaunts It Right

This week I’d explore some of the fashions featured in one of my favorite movies of all time – Zoolander. After recently learning that the sequel to this fashion-themed slapstick comedy in the process of being developed, I have been reminiscing about the insane outfits worn by the movie’s characters.
The film’s main character, Derek Zoolander, comes off as a self-absorbed male model. Known for his quirky poses and silly facial expressions, Derek’s attire throughout the movie is not only filled with over-the-top, silly designs but complements his personality and intense stares very well. Whether he’s giving his “Blue Steel” or “Magnum” poses, Derek’s use of bold patterns and shiny fabrics reminds me of the 1980’s.

Hansel, Derek’s opponent in the movie, is a newbie to the modeling industry. His style can be described as a bohemian, carefree maverick who reveals his inspiration to become a model to be Derek himself.  Hansel’s laid-back personality is translated through his use of flower prints, fringe, and leather.

And of course, the main villain in the film, Mugatu, conveys a distinctive style which incorporates using eccentric applique pieces, glossy textured fabrics, and branding his name on everything he owns. Besides also being recognized for his unusually-styled hair, Mugatu is also credited as to be the creator of the piano key men’s tie.
